Soon 17 kids and counting became 19 kids and counting. With the growth of the family came growth with the show. Many people feel that they too are apart of the family. They watch “everything” the family does. However if you compare the Duggars to before there stardom you would find a shocking transformation. The Duggars went from a regular family to spokes people for the way god want us to live. Michelle Duggar, the mother before the show used birth control, she stopped soon after having her first son Josh. The Duggars are extremely vocal about their views on birth control. They also look down upon anyone who use it and the daughters are not allowed to take it. Also they are not allowed to date like normal teens. Instead of getting to decide who they want to date, their parents choice for them. They are treat more like
object than people.
As the kids started getting older Jim Bob decided that it was time for them to start courting. Courting is like dating, however for the girls Jim Bob picked who they could court. Also they were to follow very specific rule while courting. They had to have a chaperon on all their date. They may not hug, hold hands, or kiss because that is to temping. The world found it so interesting the way courting worked and loved watching the relationships blossom. Many were skeptical it and thought it was ridiculous. After watching Josh and Anna, Jill and Derek, and Jessa and Ben all “successfully” court America was hooked. They made America believe that its was all butterflies and rainbows.
The Duggars had convinced America that they were the perfect family. With most of America loving the Duggars it left very few people questioning their authenticity. This was all until rumors went swirling around about Josh Duggar being a child molester. The Duggars didn't know what to think of their perfect christian family image being ruined by something they thought they had put in the past.
Josh Duggar the eldest child of the 20 kids, is rumored to have molested a couple of his sisters. The Duggar’s responded to this rumor by releasing a statement “When we learned of this late last night our hearts were broken. As we continue to place our trust in God we ask for your prayers for Josh, Anna, our grandchildren and our entire family.” The Duggars' were heart broken not for their son but because their perfect christian family isn’t so perfect after all. Not only did Jim Bob and Michelle release a statement but soon after Josh released a statement saying:
“I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife.I am so ashamed of the double life that I have been living and am grieved for the hurt, pain and disgrace my sin has caused my wife and family, and most of all Jesus and all those who profess faith in Him. I brought hurt and a reproach to my family, close friends and the fans of our show with my actions that happened when I was 14-15 years old, and now I have re-broken their trust.”
When children are raised by strict parents that have such high standards of expectations it just causes the children to become disobedient. In the case of the Duggars' they were known for these extremely rules. Many people believe that the only reason they are even famous is because how outrageous their family is. In typical family situations their is a stage of rebellion. For the Duggars' because they had their own show that basically portrayed a “Perfect christian family” the children never had that chance to rebel. This lead to hidden incidents such as Josh Duggar’s childhood mistakes, his addiction to porn, and his cheating on this wife.
Although most of the examples listed here are about Josh the other kid have also had hidden rebellions. Jessa Duggar has been known to post what her family would view as inappropriate photos. This photo consist of being able to see her knees. Also Jessa and her husband Ben were rumored to not being able to wait until their wedding was over to consecrate their marriage.
The Duggars outrage many people because at first they were seen to be the perfect a family and now many believe the parents are too strict. They are creating monsters that are rebelling from this cult like living.
