Social Media and its negative impact on sports

Today everyone has a smartphone for the most part and everyone has social media at their fingertips and anything can be said on there whenever someone has an Internet connection via twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or Yik Yak. Also in today’s sports world every professional or college sports team has a social media page for advertising and get news out there for the team, but at the same time all of these pages can have a negative impact. These teams can post things and it can be on purpose or on accident from coaches getting fired to team pages tweet out negative things about other teams by accident.
I personally play on a college sports team here at Merrimack and my coach always tells us to be careful what we post on social media because it does not only impact us but it impacts our program. Another thing he states is that there should not be any pictures with alcohol on our social media because athletes and alcohol do not mix. But we all know that this is not true about the alcohol in the athlete’s lives. Another thing he states is that there should not be any negative pictures or statuses about the program or us because when we try to get into the real world it may hold us back with getting a job.
In Bosnia the head soccer coach of FK Drina Zvornik got fired through Facebook. According to Sean Swabby of The Bleacher Report “The coach was scrolling through his Facebook timeline and he read the link that read he was fired.” I personally think that this is the worse way that someone can get fired and in my opinion the team lost a lot of creditability and professionalism. They were in last place at the time and coaches get fired all the time because of poor performances but it is usually done in person. After the coach found out he was fired he commented on the shared link and said “THANKS FOR THE NOTICE” which I found to be very professional because he kept his cool and did not become negative on social media and went down to their level.
We all know that all of the Major League baseball teams have twitter accounts to keep fans updated with news and injury reports, which is a quick and easy way to get information out into the world without T.V. or a news station.  The Texas Rangers a well-known baseball team Tweeted “Fire Charlie #bye” according to Thomas Duffy of The Bleacher Report (see picture below).  Obviously the person who was part of the social media department of the Rangers got fired for this. The tweet was about Head Coach Charlie Strong of University of Texas who got their Asses handed to them 50-7 by TCU. The Rangers released a statement that apologized to the University and their coach. They also stated that the person who posted this was unemployed immediately. Clearly the person who posted this wanted to post this on their personal account but the fucked up and made a huge mistake that cost them their job.
Now a day’s people hide behind social media like the FK Drina Zvornik staff they could have told the coach in person and it would have been less embarrassing for both parties. I personally believe that today’s generation hides behind social media and many cyber-bullying cases are brought up. Also going back to social media and the Rangers like my coach said whatever you post will come and bite you in the ass like the social media employee in for the Rangers. In the end social media can destroy teams and make them look like villains rather than heroes.
