Throughout the change in society and media, it has affected and influenced the way that young teenagers and adults talk. Most people these days by hearing language through music, TV shows, and even reading social media has affected the writing skills for many students. What is considered slang? When are some of these words that we use today considered acceptable in writing, or when are they even acceptable to put into school essays?
So many kids not only have been influenced by TV shows, but what has had a major contribution to this writing issue are things such as twitter and facebook. While reading an article written by Ryan Lytle a lot of information was mentioned about how students don't capitalize words and punctuation is awful. It's said that a lot of the students don't even realize that they're doing it because when we use social media we tend to not be looking for the correct format which is then brought into the classroom. Take a minute and think about that, it's so true ,we read things expecting grammar and spelling to be perfect just because it's online but that's not always true. Another huge issue is a majority of these teenagers read over those words and think that just because they are spelt wrong it won't affect them, but they can because the more we see that word the more it seems acceptable to use.
Since this issue has been brought up even into discussion at school it has also been a topic about college essays. The language and the way that these students talk has changed for the worse. If you think about how just socializing between teenagers has changedcan you even imagine how much the writing aspect has changed. Something interesting that was said in Ryan Lytles article was that "there is a measure of uncertainty as to whether college admissions officials will adapt to this social change in language, or if future prospective college students will need to be mindful and observant of the words they use. Ananda Mitra, professor and chair of the department of communication at Wake Forest, believes colleges will continue to place the responsibility on students to conform during the admissions process. " This brought up an interesting idea of how no matter what teenagers will still have to adjust and change their language for their college essays.
So no matter what slang really isn't acceptable and it will for awhile stay unprofessional. Imagine a professor or a higher figure of any sort say "rofl" or "lmao" or any of those text slang words. It would be weird and socially awkward really. Teenagers will have to stay focused on the idea of where they can't use that kind of language. As the years progress we all know that the change and affects that society will have on teenagers and how language use will be much tougher to change in the future than it is now. In the future teenagers will have more of that language availible and if anything it will get a lot tougher to control that.
